  • All of the above, but speeders just make me nervous.

    • Drivers should be aware, but there is no enforcement either! Some of the biggest risks and biggest agression in my experience comes from taxi (including Hacks, private hire and uber/glasgo) drivers and bus drivers. Those are particularly worrying as they are professional road users and should definitely know better. Generally driver impatience is my biggest concern when on the road as it makes drivers angry, frustrated and distracted - and more likely to kill or injure me.

      • I do mean potholes in part... as a bike rider I often have to swerve to avoid them (ones which would bend my wheel, or possibly throw me off) which makes me unpredictable to other road traffic. But drivers are also trying to avoid them and doing their own manoeuvres. But poor road condition also refers to unsuitable road surfacing in general, there are number of cobbled cycle lanes in the city and also areas where there is a difference in height between two intersecting infrastructures which means directing a bike wheel over a slippy kerb stone at an angle. I am often worried about slipping into the path of traffic when trying these junctions.

        • Many thanks for your contribution. Of the issues you described, is there one that you find has the most significant impact on you as a road user?

          • Hello Jennifer. Glasgow Road Policing regularly run Operation Close Pass events to educate drivers to leave space for cyclists when passing.

If a driver acts aggressively as you describe I encourage you to report this via 101 to allow investigation.

            • Hi there, the liveable neighbourhoods programme (https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/liveableneighbourhoods) has four themes; Streets for People, Active Travel, Local Town Centres and Everyday Journeys, these which will identify existing activity and propose new interventions to rebalance our streets. We have an ongoing project right now in Shawlands and Strathbungo looking at accessibility and improved connections for walking, wheeling and cycling (https://mansewood-to-shawlands-ln-glasgowgis.hub.arcgis.com/pages/latest-news).

              • Disappointing to note there is no option for traffic control measures- that would be my top choice. Then I was going to say speeding drivers but drivers will only speed if road conditions allow. We need 20 mph zones in ALL residential areas eg Kilmarnock Rd through Shawlands. We need physical demarcation of road surfaces in these residential/ shopping areas which are busy with pedestrians. There was a fatality in Kilmarnock Rd at a very busy and speeding part of the street. We need to create an area which using road surfaces visually slows drivers down.

                • Why can you only choose one answer? Road pot holes are a cause of damage and erratic driving.

                  • Thanks for your response, we have worked in partnership with bus operators in the past and I do know they treat road safety as a priority in their training. We will review this and discuss what more can be done with our partners in Cycling Scotland to engage with bus and fleet operators. We do promote our road safety campaigns in the various taxi operator hubs throughout the year , but again we can review what more can be done to improve engagement in this area
